Zen Shiatsu- how it s working

Shiatsu is a form of manual body therapy that originated in Japan and is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): The theory of meridians and energy pathways, including associated acupuncture points, forms the foundation.

These principles have also been demonstrated in the West in several studies:

Our muscles are surrounded by a fascial network. Acupuncture points are located where this network thickens. When these are stimulated, either with needles or, in Shiatsu, with the hands, the impulses are transmitted directly to the nervous system.

The energy pathway system is a self-contained network that runs between the blood vessels, muscles, lymph, and bones and keeps us alive.

Through mindful pressure with the hands, thumbs, elbows, and even the knees, through rotations, stretches, and gentle joint mobilization, the energy, known as QI,

is influenced and harmonized within the body. The entire body is treated during a session.

The focus is always on the current situation.

Before each session, a:

  • Hara and meridian diagnosis (abdominal palpation)
  • Boshin (examination of the entire energy field)
  • brief oral medical history

is taken.

Based on this, the treatment is designed anew each time.

Do the clients need more grounding, opening, centering, energy distribution, or calming?

Shiatsu was further developed by Shizuto Masunaga in Japan into what is known as Zen Shiatsu. He researched and discovered that the meridians do not only run in specific areas, but rather permeate the entire body. He also had a Zen Buddhist background through his mother. Thus, he chose this compound name, which also reflected the concentration and mindfulness of his work.

Zen Shiatsu is holistic and affects body, mind, and soul.

Tensions are released.

Blood circulation is stimulated: improved circulation supports the supply of oxygen and nutrients.

Self-healing powers and self-awareness processes are triggered.

The internal organs are strengthened.
